Overview:

 

The policy setting allows IP Address Management on computers with multiple network adapters, typically on laptops that can have LAN and Wi-Fi connections. 

If you enable this policy setting, Wi-Fi Network Adapter state will toggle between disconnected and connected state in the office only.  When the network cable is plugged in and the Active Directory domain is reachable, the software will first release the IP address assigned to the Wi-Fi adapter to the assigning DHCP Server pool and disconnect it.  The user continues to operate the computer using the network cable connection.

 

In addition, if the "Manage DNS A type record for computer's hostname" GPO setting is also enabled, the software will also remove the second DNS A record (for the Wi-Fi IP address) for the host from the DNS zone. With this feature enabled, only one network connection to Active Directory is maintained, returning the unused IP address back into the DHCP Server pool and maintaining only one active IP address record in DNS zone.

 

Purpose:

 

This article provides instructions on testing the SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions software.  The Manage Wi-Fi Adaptor State feature is configured using the Administrative Template.  After installing the Administrative Template file, the policy setting can be found under COMPUTER CONFIGURATION \ Administrative Templates \ SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions \ Network \Network Access Manager\ Manage Wi-Fi Adaptor State.

 

Prerequisites:

  • Network Adapter and Wi-Fi Adapter installed
  • Supported Microsoft Windows Operating Systems
    • Microsoft Windows XP 
    • Microsoft Windows Vista 
    • Microsoft Windows 7.0 
    • Microsoft Windows 8.1
  • .NET Framework 4.0
  • Active Domain Membership in Microsoft Active Directory domain
  • Microsoft Outlook or other E-mail client 
  • SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions 2014

Active Directory Domain Environment

  • Single Active Directory Domain environment i.e. Single Forest with Forest Root Domain only example. F10.LOCAL
  • You can setup a more complex Active Directory Domain environment, if needed.  For example, one forest F10.LOCAL with child domains D10.F10.LOCAL, D11.F10.LOCAL and D12.F10.LOCAL and a trusted forest F20.LOCAL with child domains D20.F20.LOCAL, D21.F20.LOCAL and D22.F20.LOCAL
  • Security Group(s)
  • Create a security group called "SYNERGIX ADCE Managed Computers".  The group type may be Domain Global Group or Domain Local Group.
  • Add the test domain computer(s) into the security group "SYNERGIX ADCE Managed Computers"
  • Delegate Control

               Not required for this feature

  • Configure domain Group Policy Object
  • Copy SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions Administrative Template file SYNERGIX-ADCE.ADMX to %SystemRoot%\PolicyDefinitions on admin workstation ( must be Windows 7.0 ) 
  • Copy SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions Administrative Template Language file SYNERGIX-ADCE.ADML to %SystemRoot%\PolicyDefinitions\en-US on same admin workstation ( must be Windows 7.0 ) 
  • Using GPMC.MSC, edit existing or new Group Policy Object
  • In Group Policy Editor, expand COMPUTER CONFIGURATION
  • Expand Administrative Templates
  • Expand SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions
  • Expand Network
  • Expand Network Access Manager
  • Select Manage Wi-Fi Adapter State
  • Enable the policy
  • Specify the Run Interval, Corporate Network SSID. The software will use this SSID and re-establish connection to designated Wi-Fi network in the office.
  • Enter the Custom Notification Message and Notification Message Title
  • Select the Manage Adapter Method
  • Click OK to save the settings 

 

Procedure

  • Ensure that the computer is LAN connected
  • Log into a domain computer using an account that has administrative privileges.
  • Install SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions software
  • Ensure the SYNERGIX AD Client Extensions specific Group Policy settings were configured and are applied.
    • Launch RSOP.MSC or run GPRESULT.EXE /v to confirm
  • Logout

 

  • Ensure that the computer is LAN connected
  • Log into the same domain computer with a domain user account.  
    • This domain account represents a business user who does not have elevated privileges on his / her computer.
  • Unplug the LAN cable
  • In few moments after disconnecting the LAN cable, your laptop should get connected to the designated Wi-Fi network specified in the GPO setting
  • Wait for about 5 minutes to simulate the the user walking from the desk to a conference room
  • Plug the network cable again
  • WiFi will get disconnected
    • IP address which is released to the DHCP Server
    • DNS A record associated with the WiFi adapter will be deleted
    • Wait for AD Replication Cycle to complete and for the DNS record TTL to elapse before you test the name resolution.

  2. Upload test results document file to software test repository
  3. Upload log files
  4. ServiceLogfile.txt
  5. ClientLogfile.txt
  6. Output of GPRESULTS.EXE /V command

Note: You must use ADCE \ Help \ Submit Log Files button to zip up above 3 files and submit
